Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum (沖縄県立博物館・美術館)

The cultural creative facility which has brought together Okinawan history, culture and artwork

The first facility in Okinawa to have a museum and art museum combined together, and was renovated from the former museum in Shuri.

Four stories high and one below, this building is inspired by Gusuku (castle) in Ryukyu Kingdom era with the white wall surrounding it.

The museum offers you easy interpretation about things ranging from Okinawan nature to its history and culture in terms of “marine aspects” and “insular aspects”. Besides, 5 category exhibition rooms, including natural history, archeology, arts and crafts and folklore, and an outdoor exhibition room are featured.

The art museum shows you not only Okinawan art work and the one associated with Okinawa, but the ones made by foreign artists. Also, it introduces you variously paintings, sculptures, architecture, craftwork, calligraphy, literature, music, dance and much more.

Some shops and cafés are on the second floor, and some project exhibitions are held there.
The museum volunteer staffs over-familiar with inside the building let you look around in a relaxed way.
